Scout Motors and Blythewood: What It Means for North Columbia

Jill Hydrick, Realtor September 15, 2026

New automotive manufacturing campus rising among Carolina pines at golden hour

Scout Motors is building its first U.S. production center in Blythewood, Richland County, and it is the largest economic development project in the county's history. For buyers looking at North Columbia homes like the new construction at 119 Hastings Point Dr, the plant is one more reason the corridor toward Blythewood is worth a serious look.

The numbers behind the Scout Motors Production Center

The plant is a roughly $2 billion investment on an 1,100-acre campus in Blythewood, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Columbia. At full capacity it is planned to build up to 200,000 vehicles a year, starting with the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup, and support more than 4,000 permanent jobs. A separate supplier park adds roughly 200 acres and around 1,000 more jobs.

South Carolina approved a record $1.3 billion incentive package to land the project. Construction has been underway since 2024, with large-scale hiring expected in 2026 and production targeted to begin in 2027.

What that means for North Columbia buyers

Homes in neighborhoods like Hastings Point sit inside the commute ring: I-77 connects the area to downtown Columbia quickly, and Blythewood sits up U.S. 21 to the north. As the plant ramps up, the north side becomes the natural place to live for thousands of new Midlands households, from supplier employees to engineers and the trades that follow them.

  • New construction like 119 Hastings Point Dr gives early buyers a finished home ahead of the area's build-out
  • I-77, I-277, and I-20 keep the airport, downtown, and Lexington within reach
  • Blythewood's Main Street, coffee shops, and lake-country feel are minutes up the road

One honest caveat: Scout's timeline is a plan, not a promise. The company publishes its own progress updates, and your agent can help you compare how new construction in the corridor is pricing against established resale inventory.
